Partnering with Cincinnati Children’s is a ‘win’ for all involved

Today we are announcing a new kind of partnership for UK HealthCare with
one of the nation’s most respected children’s hospitals. This new
relationship between Kentucky Children’s Hospital and Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital Medical Center will enable us to reopen our
pediatric cardiothoracic surgery program in the coming months.

It melds our strength as this region’s leading provider of advanced
subspecialty care with the nation’s third-ranked children’s hospital and
10th ranked pediatric heart care program. By working together, more Kentucky children can receive care close to home.
Together, we will jointly recruit a heart surgeon who will have dual appointments – here and at Cincinnati Children’s– and will be based here in Lexington at Kentucky Children’s Hospital,
the primary service location. We are also in the process of selecting a
director of the pediatric heart program who will oversee the “one
program, two sites” model and drive its development. The program’s
director will be employed by UK and based in Lexington, serving as
program liaison for both sites.

Our agreement comes only a few months after we signed a letter of intent
(September 3, 2015) to move toward a significant partnership to provide
pediatric heart care services in the region. In fact, we have signed a
master services agreement with the option to extend our partnership
beyond pediatric heart care services if we both desire.

Our approach to this fragile population will be a comprehensive,
multidisciplinary and team-based, focused on quality and safety at all
times. When we voluntarily suspended our pediatric cardiothoracic
program in October 2012, we said we would only reopen the program when
we were ready to provide the best care for our patients and their

We are confident that this collaborative arrangement meets that mark
with the highest quality surgical and clinical care, education and
research in pediatric cardiovascular services for patients of Kentucky
and their families.

Please congratulate your colleagues in Kentucky Children’s Hospital. In
the coming days we will be holding a celebratory event with our
pediatric faculty and staff. Thanks to their insight and devotion to the
patient, we are taking a giant step forward today.
